7 NBA Debates That Actually Matter (and 3 That Don't)

Most "GOAT" arguments are unfalsifiable. These seven are real, defensible, and worth your time.

The bad ones first

  • "Who would win 1v1?" — basketball isn't 1v1. Useless.
  • "Was prime X better than peak Y?" — different eras, different rules, no control.
  • "Ring counting" — team sport. Stop.

The ones worth arguing

  1. Best era to be a non-shooting big. Real basketball question with a real answer.
  2. Did the corner-three rule the most important change in modern offense?
  3. Is regular-season MVP a flawed award?
  4. Should the league cap player movement?
  5. Who is the most underrated playoff performer of the 2010s?
  6. Did the Warriors break the league or fix it?
  7. What's the most important defensive skill in 2026?
Each one has evidence on both sides and changes how you watch the next game.
